Geoffrey Burchell House

Web_Homes_-_Burchell_HouseOn 13 June 1995, Geoffrey Burchell House, was formally opened by the Grand Master, M Wor Bro Ronnie Bauser. The house is situated on Main Road, Bergvliet and is close to the Blue Route shopping centre. It was the GLSA Southern Division's 1st Masonic Abbeyfield Home for Seniors.

After considerable research, the property had been purchased by Geoffrey Burchell and his team and, using Freemasons and friends, Geoff had made extensive alterations to facilitate the required accomodation. Today Geoffrey Burchell House has 8 residents and has 6 bathrooms, a lounge, dining room, library area and beautifully fitted kitchen.

The House Committee is now chaired by the man who played so significant role in establishing our Masonic Homes, R Wor Bro Andy van Niekerk. He is assisted by his wife Doreen and R Wor Bros Alf Rhoodie and Chris Barnard. The property is well maintained and secured and the 7 ladies and 1 gentleman in residence enjoy a very attractive lifestyle.

Any article on Geoffrey Burchell House would be incomplete without paying tribute to the very significant contribution made by the late Wor Bro Nic Leary and his wife Val. Nic was Chairman of the House Committee for a number of years and he and Val made an enormous contribution. To them, their residents were simply part of their extended family and they treated them accordingly and, of course, the residents loved them for it.
