PGL (Southern Division) took a major decision in July 2004. After 30 years of successfully developing and running our “Homes for Seniors” projects, it was decided to venture into a whole new field of charitable support and provide a special “Home for Quadriplegics”.
For those of you who are perhaps less informed in this area, Quadriplegics are people who have little or no use of any of their 4 limbs. Inevitably, they are fully dependant on their wheelchairs and can not function without a significant amount of outside assistance. They are real, bright, intelligent people restricted by challenges that most of us find difficult to properly comprehend.
What Southern Division did, is purchase a home at 9 Gazelle Crescent, Uitzicht, Durbanville which had been specifically designed for quadriplegic use. The home has wide passages, a completely open plan kitchen and bathrooms which cater for the use of wheelchairs. We made various modifications to increase the occupancy capacity and our Home now accommodates 7 quadriplegics and 2 staff.
From a practical point of view, this is a joint venture with the Western Cape Division of theQuadriplegic Association of South Africa. Southern Division are fully responsible for the house itself and encourage Lodges to support projects for resident’s needs. QASA, represented by Danny and Alta Retief, identify and manage the residents and staff and ensure that the monthly general running costs are fully catered for.
